The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was observed in Shyamnagar Upazila with the theme “Working Together to Reduce Disaster Risk.” The event was organized by the Upazila Administration in collaboration with the NGO Forum.

A rally started from the Upazila Parishad premises and ended with a discussion meeting at the Parishad hall, presided over by UNO Ms. Roni Khatun. Among others, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Rashed Hossain, Project Implementation Officer Miraj Hossain, Press Club President Samiul Azam Monir, Freedom Fighter G.M. Osman Gani, NGO representative Gazi Al Imran, and former Vice-Chairman Nurjahan Parvin Jharna spoke.

The speakers of the event emphasized that Shyamnagar, being a disaster-prone area, requires integrated and community-based initiatives to reduce disaster risks. They mentioned that human-induced disasters, unplanned shrimp farming, and canal encroachments worsen flood and embankment damage.

UNO Roni Khatun said, “Disasters cannot be avoided, but preparedness, people’s participation, and scientific planning can reduce losses and save lives.” She urged all to work together for sustainable coastal protection.

Speakers also highlighted that public awareness, early warning systems, and active local volunteer networks are the measures to minimizing disaster losses in coastal areas.
