A day-long youth workshop on agroecology, climate justice, and food sovereignty was held recently in Rajshahi. The workshop took place in Bilnepalpara of Darshanpara Union under Paba Upazila and was jointly organized by the Bilnepalpara Chashi Club and BARCIK.
A total of 40 participants, including farmers, women farmers, youth entrepreneurs, students, representatives of model “Shotobari” (homestead farming) initiatives, and BARCIK officials participated in the workshop. The event was facilitated by Md. Touhidul Islam, Associate Programme Officer of BARCIK.

During the sessions, BARCIK’s Regional Coordinator and legal and environmental researcher Md. Shahidul Islam highlighted the importance of agroecology in sustaining ecosystems and protecting plant and animal life. He discussed about the use of local knowledge and experience in agriculture to ensure safe food production. He also discussed about the conservation and use of indigenous seeds, and the application of organic fertilizers to maintain soil health.
Mr. Islam said, “We want an agriculture system that does not harm our environment or livelihoods. Youth participation is crucial to addressing the challenges of climate justice and food sovereignty.”
Participants shared that practical training on environment-friendly farming, seed preservation, organic inputs, and fair market systems has increased their interest in agriculture. They also said that active participation of women is opening new opportunities in the sector.

Speaking on behalf of the youth participants, Mst. Sakila Khatun said, “Such workshops help young people become entrepreneurs and strengthen the rural economy through sustainable agriculture.” Farmer Md. Tushar Ali said, “We should reduce chemical fertilizers and pesticides and promote local, eco-friendly farming practices to protect soil health and biodiversity.
The workshop concluded with a call to empower youth as future leaders in building a climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural system.
