Pahela Baishakh celebrated with 164 native Rice Varieties and Panta festival

By S.M. Osman Goni from Satkhira

On the occasion of Pahela Baishakh, BARCIK organized a unique event in the coastal region to promote indigenous rice conservation and celebrate Bengali food heritage.

The program featured an exhibition of 164 varieties of native rice, including both rare and commonly cultivated types. Visitors were introduced to the names, characteristics, and uses of each variety, making the event both informative and engaging.

Following the exhibition, a traditional panta festival was held using the same number of local rice varieties. The panta was served with mashed potatoes, shrimp, raw mango, green chili, and onions, reflecting the richness of rural food culture.

Held on April 14 in Sonamugari village of Shyamnagar, the event created a festive atmosphere. It was chaired by Kiran Shankar Chattopadhyay and hosted by S.M. Osman Goni. People from different backgrounds including youth, women, and local community members participated actively.

Local farmer Jabbar Gazi said that native varieties are gradually disappearing and such initiatives help to raise awareness about their conservation. Housewife Lakshmi Rani said the festival revived memories of traditional foods, while youth representative Bonya Chatterjee highlighted the importance of educating younger generations.

BARCIK’s Regional Coordinator Md. Shahin Islam said the initiative aims to promote indigenous rice diversity, farmers’ rights, and food sovereignty, with plans to continue similar programs in the future.
