Kobita Rani now as a change maker

By Rasheda Akter from Manikganj

Since 2018, BARCIK has been implementing gender-focused programs in Manikganj to promote women’s rights and empowerment. As part of this initiative, the Upazila Women Development Committee was formed in 2019 with 15 members, which has now grown to 25 members. The committee works to prevent child marriage, violence against women and children, and raises awareness among parents and adolescents about the harmful effects of early marriage and related laws.

One of the active members of the committee is Kobita Karmakar, the cultural secretary of the committee. She lives in Uchutia village under Manikganj municipality and has been involved with BARCIK since 2009. Through village-level organizing and awareness activities, she has worked to improve education and livelihoods among marginalized communities.

Kobita shared that in the beginning her husband did not allow her to attend meetings, and she had little confidence to speak publicly. She faced neglect and hardship within her family. However, after participating in BARCIK’s awareness meetings and community activities, she gradually became confident and emerged as a local leader.

Today, Kobita Rani actively raises awareness on child marriage, women’s rights, education, and violence prevention. She even successfully stopped the child marriage of a relative’s daughter, who is now continuing her studies.

Kobita also practices homestead gardening using local seeds. Initially supported by BARCIK with seeds, she now preserves seeds herself, grows vegetables organically, sells produce, and contributes financially to her family. This economic contribution increased her confidence and respect within both her family and community. She believes that her transformation and empowerment became possible because of BARCIK’s support and encouragement.
