An initiative has been launched to install a pocket gate in the Namovhadra Lakeside Slum in Rajshahi City to address the long-standing mobility challenges faced by approximately 250 families living in the settlement.
For nearly four decades, residents have lived in the slum adjacent to a railway wall that has significantly restricted their movement. The barrier has created daily difficulties, particularly for women, children, older people, and individuals requiring urgent medical care.

To explore possible solutions, a discussion was organized recently through the joint efforts of the Rajshahi City Corporation, BARCIK, and the Green Coalition. Led by Urban Developer Azizur Rahman, the meeting focused on the necessity of establishing a pocket gate, identifying a suitable location, and reviewing the progress of ongoing initiatives.
Participants highlighted several humanitarian concerns. In addition to disrupting daily movement, the wall has made it difficult for emergency vehicles to enter the settlement. Residents also reported that transporting deceased individuals out of the community has become an extremely challenging and distressing experience due to the lack of an adequate passage.

The discussion also included a research initiative involving students from Rajshahi University. The study is examining the impact of the railway wall on the community’s mobility and overall living conditions. The findings will be incorporated into future advocacy efforts and submitted to the relevant authorities.
Community leaders expressed hope that the installation of the pocket gate would significantly improve mobility and ensure safer access for the settlement’s residents.
