Women and girls now aware about the importance of reproductive health

By Ritu Robi Das from Manikganj

A few years ago, discussing reproductive health and family planning in rural communities was considered socially uncomfortable. Accessing family planning services often required women to travel long distances to health centers, making essential healthcare inaccessible for many.

Since 2023, regular community-based courtyard meetings have transformed this situation. Led by Family Welfare Assistants, these meetings provide free family planning services directly within villages.

Women can now receive contraceptive pills, condoms, and injectable contraceptives without traveling to distant health facilities. The initiative has reduced transportation costs, saved time, and made reproductive healthcare more accessible.

More importantly, the meetings have created a safe environment where women can openly discuss reproductive health, contraceptive methods, potential side effects, and available solutions.

The growing awareness is evident in women’s increasing engagement with healthcare workers. Many now actively contact Family Welfare Assistants by phone to seek information and follow up on services.

Currently, nearly 200 women in eight communities regularly receive these services. The program has contributed to improved maternal and child health, greater financial stability, and stronger decision-making among women regarding family planning. The initiative has also increased awareness among adolescent girls about the importance of tetanus vaccination and timely immunization.

The success of these courtyard meetings demonstrates that community-based healthcare can significantly improve access to reproductive health services while empowering rural women to make informed decisions about their health and family well-being.
