An awareness program on the harmful effects of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was held at Dorikandi Government Primary School in Harirampur upazila of Manikganj district organized by BARCIK and Upazila Green Coalition. The program was organized with the slogan, “Protect Life and Nature, Say No to Pesticides.”

Teachers and students of the school actively participated in the event. As part of the program, students drew natural scenery and presented their views highlighting the adverse impacts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on the environment and human health. The students also presented short reports focusing on the risks associated with excessive chemical use.
The discussion session was addressed by the head teacher of Dorikandi Government Primary School, Mohammad Sher Ali, assistant teacher Shahana Akter, Bappi Khan, a member of the Harirampur Upazila Green Solidarity Committee, and BARCIK Program Officer Sattaranjan Saha.

Speakers said that excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is severely damaging soil health and gradually reducing land fertility. The use of chemicals in agriculture is increasing day by day, posing serious threats to biodiversity. Birds, bees, frogs, beneficial insects, and livestock are at risk, while the overall environment is being degraded.
They also pointed out that farmers are becoming ill due to the unconscious and improper use of chemical pesticides. In addition, children and students are suffering from long-term diseases due to the consumption of adulterated food and food items without expiry dates.

The speakers emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness among all segments of society. Through increased awareness, it is possible to protect students’ health and preserve life and nature. They called upon everyone to come forward to safeguard the environment and biodiversity.
