Biodiversity Fair Celebrated on International Biodiversity Day

By Osman Goni Sohag from Satkhira,

A unique biodiversity fair was organized at Harinagar Satsang Temple premises in Shyamnagar recently to mark International Biodiversity Day. The event, held under the theme “Local Action for Global Impact,” was jointly organized by community-based organizations, the Shyamnagar Upazila Volunteer Association, the Green Coalition, and supported by BARCIK.

Farmers, forest-dependent people, fishers, indigenous communities, students, teachers, journalists, and representatives from 25 youth organizations participated in the fair. A colorful procession featuring masks and messages representing various species highlighted the importance of biodiversity conservation.

One of the key attractions was the recognition of three local biodiversity champions: Rabindranath Mondal received the “Green Warrior” award for planting approximately 350,000 trees along riverbanks, embankments, roadsides, and char lands over 30 kilometers. While Tejendranath Mridha was honored as a “Banyan Tree Lover” for planting 1,325 banyan saplings in schools, colleges, religious institutions, markets, and public spaces since 2005. On the other hand, Tiger Gani was recognized for rescuing wildlife entering local communities, safely releasing them into the Sundarbans, saving 106 forest workers from tiger attacks, and contributing significantly to forest conservation.

Participants discussed local biodiversity challenges and proposed collective actions for protecting ecosystems and natural resources. Cultural performances by the indigenous Munda community and Sundarbans-dependent fishing communities added vibrancy to the event.

Students from Bonshree Secondary School visited exhibition stalls displaying local biodiversity, indigenous seeds, agroecological practices, medicinal plants, and coastal livelihoods. A biodiversity quiz competition encouraged students to learn more about nature conservation and the Sundarbans. As a symbolic commitment to environmental protection, students pledged to plant mango seeds after consuming 100 mangoes provided during the event.
