Dreams and Stories of Change

By Ritu Robi Das from Manikganj

Change never happens overnight. It comes with obstacles, especially when it involves transforming an entire community. One such story of change is from the Robi das community of West Dashra Launch Ghat, where I grew up.

The past and present of this community are vastly different. This transformation took time, particularly in eliminating child marriage. Today, we proudly declare our community free from child marriage.

BARCIK began its work here in 2007 focusing on child education. At that time, very few children attended school, and no one pursued higher education. Understanding that education is key to transformation, BARCIK expanded learning opportunities, including tutoring at the secondary level and computer training.

From Darkness to Light

The Robi das community, once marginalized and impoverished, is now rapidly transforming. Child marriage, once common due to poverty, has nearly disappeared. Today, girls hold books instead of bridal henna. Education has reached every household. All children now attend school regularly, and many have progressed to university-level studies. Despite ongoing poverty, families prioritize education and reject child marriage.

Previously, livelihood options were limited. Now, many young people are becoming entrepreneurs, nurses, or skilled workers such as tailors, creating their own employment opportunities.

This progress proves that with opportunity and determination, marginalized communities can rise. The transformation is not just about education or ending child marriage actually it is about achieving dignity and equal rights.

BARCIK’s contribution has been significant, but the community’s own determination made this change possible. The future holds promise for even greater progress.
