Youth demand increased climate finance from rich nations

As part of the Global Climate Strike, a climate justice rally was held in Shyamnagar, Satkhira recently. The strike took place on a newly risen sandbar in the Khulpetua River near Atulia Union, symbolizing the impacts of climate change on coastal communities.

The event was jointly organized by BARCIK and 12 local youth volunteer groups, with more than 50 young people, students, and climate activists participating. Gazi Abdur Rouf, President of Utsorgo, chaired the program.

With slogans such as “From Shyamnagar to COP-30, Stand for Climate Justice” and “Just Transition Now!”, participants formed a human chain and took part in a symbolic strike. Speakers from various youth and community organizations highlighted that coastal Bangladesh especially the southwest region which is among the worst affected by climate change, despite contributing least to global emissions.

They called on developed nations attending COP negotiations to significantly increase climate finance, stressing that polluting countries must take responsibility. Speakers also demanded urgent operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund with direct participation of affected communities.The event concluded with a united call from participating youth groups: “Finance Justice for All, Fulfill Loss and Damage Commitments!”
