Sustainable farming through Vermicompost

By Mofijur Rahman from Shyamnagar, Satkhira

Due to increasing soil salinity, declining fertility, and dependence on chemical fertilizers, agriculture faces serious challenges. In this context, Gobinda Mondal, a farmer from Ishwaripur Union, has developed a successful sustainable farming model using vermicompost.

Starting in November 2024 with just one pit and 100 grams of earthworms, he learned vermicomposting through practical training. Over time, his skills improved, and now he successfully operates 10 compost pits.

His experience grew further through a learning visit to Rajshahi, where he learned proper manure preservation techniques. He discovered that manure can remain usable for a year if protected from rain and sunlight.

He follows effective methods such as stores cow dung in layers and uses it after 15 days, adjusts composting time based on worm quantity, uses more worms to speed up production and maintains continuous compost production cycles

This initiative significantly improved his financial condition. Previously, he spent 8,000–10,000 taka annually on chemical fertilizers. Now, he has eliminated that cost and even earns income by selling earthworms.

Applying vermicomst he found that his crops have improved in quality the plants look greener, have better yield stability, improved taste of vegetables and increased soil fertility. Unlike chemical fertilizers, vermicompost maintains soil health without increasing input needs.

Through his initiatives Gobinda Mondal’s work shows that local resources can support sustainable agriculture, training and knowledge sharing are important to success and organic farming is both environmentally and economically beneficial

His success shows that path of adopting agroecological practices that keep the soil fertile while boosting environmental sustainability.
