Seed Fair organized to celebrate Bengali New Year in Manikganj

By Mukter Hossain from Manikganj

The Bengali New Year (1433) was celebrated in Bahir Char village of Harirampur upazila, Manikganj, through a community-led seed diversity fair. Organized by local farmers with support from BARCIK, the fair showcased around 30 varieties of indigenous seeds, including onion, garlic, mustard, coriander, wheat, and traditional rice varieties.

Held in a local courtyard, the event created a platform for farmers to exchange seeds, share experiences, and discuss the importance of conserving local varieties.

Speakers in the fair said that conserving indigenous seeds strengthens agroecology, biodiversity, and food security. The event also highlighted the role of traditional knowledge in building sustainable agricultural systems. The seed fair served not only as a New Year celebration but also as an awareness initiative promoting resilient and community-driven farming practices.
