By Shahidul Islam from Rajshahi

A public dialogue in Darshanpara Union of Paba upazila emphasized the need to integrate agroecology, climate justice, and food sovereignty into local government planning and budgeting. The event, organized by BARCIK and the Green Coalition recently brought together farmers, women representatives, youth, and elected union parishad members.

Speakers of the event highlighted that excessive reliance on chemical-based agriculture is harming both the environment and public health. They stressed the importance of promoting agroecological practices, conserving local seeds, managing water resources, and protecting biodiversity.

Participants also noted that climate change manifested through droughts, heatwaves, and water scarcity is increasingly affecting agricultural production and food security. They urged local authorities to prioritize environmentally sustainable and inclusive planning.

A seven-point demand was presented to the union council which included: Inclusion of agroecology in annual budgets; Reduction of chemical pesticide use; Promotion of water conservation and biodiversity; Climate-sensitive development planning and Ensuring participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups
