A human chain was organized in Harirampur, Manikganj, demanding a ban on the use of destructive “China Duari” fishing nets that threaten aquatic biodiversity. The event took place on 12 November at the Padma River bank in Andharmanik Ghat, jointly organized by BARCIK and the Green Coalition.
The human chain was chaired by UP member Abdul Haque, while speakers included Green Coalition members Sunil Biswas, Solaiman Hossain, women leader Lili Begum, fisherman Ramu Halder, and BARCIK Program Officer Muktar Hossain.

Speakers said, “China Duari” net is not just a fishing tool but a deadly trap that kills all aquatic species ranging from fish and fry to frogs, crabs, snakes, and snails. Once caught, no creature can escape. This practice is destroying native fish species, disrupting aquatic ecosystems, and threatening food security.
They added that the fine mesh of these nets catches even fish eggs and tiny fry, preventing reproduction and drastically reducing fish populations. As a result, the environment and biodiversity are facing severe threats.

Participants called for urgent government action to ban the production, marketing, and use of these harmful nets to save endangered freshwater species.
Following the human chain, a memorandum was submitted to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Fisheries Office, Harirampur Police Station, and all 13 Union Parishad chairmen demanding immediate enforcement.
The event, conducted by BARCIK Program Coordinator Nazrul Islam, was attended by local social workers, farmers, boatmen, students, youth groups, and community members from different walks of life.
