Formation of the Green Coalition’s Regional Committee for Barind Tract

A regional committee of the Green Coalition has been formed recently to protect the natural environment, agro-ecosystems, and biodiversity of the Barind region and to promote climate justice.

Representatives from Nachol, Tanore, Paba, and Rajshahi City units elected the Barind Regional Committee at a conference held at BARCIK’s Rajshahi Regional Resource Centre in Baya Mor, Poba.

Mahbub Siddiqui, a noted river and environment researcher, was elected as President, while Md. Shahidul Islam, an anthropologist and environmental law researcher, became the Member Secretary. Rahima Begum, a women and environment activist from Paba, and Nur Mohammad, a self-taught agricultural scientist from Tanore, were elected Joint Vice Presidents. The President will later announce the full committee.

The Green Coalition acts as a citizen pressure group in Rajshahi and the Barind region to protect the environment, agricultural biodiversity, and the rights of marginalized communities.

Freedom fighter Mahmud Jamal Qaderi, environmentalist Nadim Sina, Atiqur Rahman Atiq (Youth Action for Social Change), Asim Kumar Sarkar, Zaidul Islam, and Almas Uddina also participated in the meeting.

Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge, BARCIK is a non-governmental non-profit development organization. Established in 1997 by a group of development practitioners, researchers and social workers, BARCIK has been working in the fields of environment and development with utmost commitment and purpose. Registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau under the Prime Minister’s Office, Government of Bangladesh, to operate foreign funds.
