Gunjon Rema from Kalmakanda, Netrakona
A farmer-led field day was held in the rice research plot at Veluatali village in Kalmakanda upazila recently, where 16 varieties of native rice were cultivated for observation and evaluation.
The event began with participants visiting the research plot to assess the rice varieties based on local suitability, yield potential, and quality characteristics. Following the assessment, several promising varieties were selected, including F-4, Rahmat, Ghigaz, M-252, Alokmoti, and Protikkha. According to farmers, these varieties demonstrated higher yields, strong plant structure, lower lodging tendency, and reduced incidence of grain spots.

After the field visit, a discussion session was held, moderated by Gunjon Rema and chaired by Abul Motaleb. The event was attended by Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer Md. Harun-ur-Rashid as the chief guest.
BARCIK Program Officer Md. Alamgir presented the objectives and significance of the field day, while plot caretaker Abul Motaleb shared the management process, challenges, and field observations from the research experience. NGO worker Abdul Momen also shared his reflections and learnings from participating in the event.

In his concluding remarks, chief guest Md. Harun-ur-Rashid appreciated the success of the research plot, the active engagement of the farmers, and BARCIK’s contribution to the conservation and improvement of local rice varieties. He expressed hope that such initiatives will play an important role in strengthening local agricultural systems in the future.
The active participation of farmers, local leaders, and agricultural officials made the field day meaningful, productive, and impactful for the entire community.
