Environmentalists, farmers, fishers, researchers, youth representatives, and civil society members have called for the effective protection and management of the Bilkumari–Biljoana Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary in Tanore, Rajshahi. The demand was raised during a public gathering jointly organized by BARCIK and the Green Coalition held recently urging authorities to ensure the proper implementation of conservation laws and safeguard the wetland’s rich biodiversity.
Declared a wetland-dependent wildlife sanctuary in May last year, Bilkumari–Biljoana is one of northern Bangladesh’s most significant freshwater ecosystems. It provides habitat for indigenous fish species, aquatic plants, water-birds, amphibians, and other wildlife while supporting groundwater recharge, agricultural production, food security, and the livelihoods of surrounding communities. Speakers noted that despite its legal status, effective management and enforcement remain inadequate.
Participants of the event expressed deep concern over destructive fishing methods including China-duari nets, current nets, poison bait, and electric fishing as well as the excessive use of hazardous pesticides, which continue to threaten aquatic biodiversity and indigenous fish populations.
The speakers called for stricter enforcement of conservation laws, regular monitoring of biodiversity, community-based co-management, promotion of agroecological farming, and stronger action against illegal fishing practices.
The gathering concluded that protecting Bilkumari–Biljoana is essential for conserving biodiversity and for ensuring sustainable agriculture, food security, and the well-being of future generations.
