Government Medical Grant Helps Stroke Survivor Rebuild His Life

By Asia Akter, from Singair, Manikganj

Sarwar Hossain, a resident of Alinagar village in Baira Union, Singair Upazila, has found new hope after receiving government financial assistance for medical treatment through the support of a local women’s organization.

Once healthy and active, Sarwar suffered a sudden stroke that left him partially paralyzed, disabling his left arm and leg. The cost of regular treatment and medication placed an enormous financial burden on his family.

During this difficult period, he sought help from the Alinagar Women’s Development Organization. The organization’s General Secretary, Samela Begum, informed him about a government medical assistance programme administered by the Department of Social Services and guided him through the application process.

With support from the organization and BARCIK, Sarwar completed the required documentation including medical certificates, identification papers, bank account information, and photographs and submitted his application online through the local Digital Centre.

Within three months, he received a government grant of BDT 50,000. Expressing his gratitude, Sarwar said, “I did not have to spend any money or face the usual administrative difficulties because of the organization’s assistance.” He further said, “The grant has allowed me to buy my medicines regularly without depending on other family members. I have also invested part of the money in my small grocery shop, which is helping me to earn an income again.”

Sarwar acknowledged that without the support of the Alinagar Women’s Development Organization, established with assistance from BARCIK, he would never have received the financial aid.

His story highlights how community organizations can play a vital role in connecting vulnerable people with essential government services, helping restore both livelihoods and dignity.

Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge, BARCIK is a non-governmental non-profit development organization. Established in 1997 by a group of development practitioners, researchers and social workers, BARCIK has been working in the fields of environment and development with utmost commitment and purpose. Registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau under the Prime Minister’s Office, Government of Bangladesh, to operate foreign funds.
