By Atikur Rahman Atik from Rajshahi

BARCIK has published a policy brief titled “Climate-Resilient Cities for Marginalized Communities: Building Inclusive Urban Development through Greening, Urban Agriculture, and Equity.” The publication was unveiled during a dialogue held at SK Seminar Hall in Ranibazar recently.

The policy brief is based on field research, case studies, and household interviews conducted in 14 slums under BARCIK’s Poverty Reduction and Urban Resilience Programme.

Findings show that urban agriculture, greening initiatives, and improved access to basic services can significantly enhance food and nutrition security, income generation, women’s empowerment, social cohesion, and climate adaptation capacity.

The policy brief recommends integrating urban agriculture into city planning, establishing community nutrition gardens, ensuring safe water, sanitation and electricity services, promoting women-led greening programmes, creating climate adaptation funds, and adopting participatory urban planning approaches.

Speakers said that marginalized urban poor must be placed at the center of development planning to build greener, more inclusive and climate-resilient cities.
