Students Pledge to Build a Greener Earth
By Md. Ohidur Rahman from Netrokona,
“Stop fossil fuels, increase the use of renewable energy” with this slogan, Earth Day was observed with enthusiasm in Netrokona. Like every year, Janata High School and Green Coalition, in collaboration with BARCIK, organized a series of programs to mark the day.

With this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” the event aimed to raise environmental awareness among students through discussions, a quiz competition, and a “Nature Bond” activity. Held in the premises of Janata High School, students participated holding colorful banners, festoons, and placards with messages about climate change and environmental protection.
The event’s chief guest was Mr. Md. Khaysul Azam, Head Teacher of Janata High School. Other participants included Mr. Ohidur Rahman, Regional Coordinator of BARCIK, Mr. Tanvir Hayat Khan, a journalist from BSS, along with teachers and students of the school.

In his speech, Mr. Khaysul Azam said, “Through carbon pollution, rich nations are damaging the atmosphere, leading to the destruction of the ozone layer. To save this planet, we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize the use of fossil fuels, and increase the adoption of renewable energy sources. If we care for nature, nature will care for us.”

Speakers at the event emphasized that unplanned human activities are placing increasing pressure on nature, resulting in global warming, droughts, soil erosion, floods, and the disappearance of wetlands. They called for collective efforts to protect the environment.
Organizers expressed hope that student participation in Earth Day activities will encourage the next generation to embrace an eco-friendly lifestyle and become stewards of the planet.
