An advocacy meeting on “Youth’s Role in the Green Coalition Movement” was held recently in Gonokpara, Rajshahi, calling for greater youth engagement in environmental conservation, safe food production and sustainable agriculture.
The meeting was jointly organized by the Barind Youth Forum, Green Coalition and BARCIK and chaired by Rubel Hossain Mintu, Member of the Advisory Council of the Barind Youth Forum. Representatives of youth and social organizations, environmental activists and organizers also attended, including Md. Raihan Jewel, President of Barnoi Folk Literature and Cultural Council; Atikur Rahman Atik, President of the Barind Youth Forum; Vice-President Mokhlesur Rahman; General Secretary Poli Rani; member Salman Farsi; and Monika Marandi of the Indigenous Students Council.
Rubel Hossain Mintu said that young people have an important role in protecting the environment, promoting safe food and expanding agroecological practices. He urged youth to initiate local environmental activities and raise awareness about safe food and environment friendly practices.
Participants mentioned that climate change, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution and excessive use of chemical pesticides pose serious threats to the environment and public health. They called for greater promotion of agroecological farming, local seed conservation, organic fertilizers, natural pest management and reduced reliance on chemical pesticides.
The meeting also discussed the Youth Climate Conference 2026, including young people’s responsibilities, proposals and participation in making the event successful. Participants stressed the importance of youth-led initiatives for climate justice, environmental conservation and sustainable development at the local level.
During the open discussion, participants proposed joint initiatives on tree planting and conservation, plastic pollution reduction, waterbody protection, environmental education, safe agriculture and agroecology.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to build a stronger youth-led environmental network, strengthen coordination with local administration and institutions, and expand the Green Coalition Movement through collective action.
