Action to Clean Up Pollution and Illegal Fishing Nets Demanded
By Borsha Gain, from Satkhira
The Aiburi River flowing through Munshiganj and Ishwaripur unions of Shyamnagar is heavily polluted due to plastic waste and illegal fishing nets, affecting the lives and livelihoods of nearly 650 riverside families who depend on its water for agriculture.

Local community report that plastic waste like polythene, plates, and food wrappers are regularly dumped into the river, blocking water flow and reducing its navigability. The pollution is also harming native fish species and making farming difficult.
Despite repeated appeals to local representatives, no concrete action has been taken. Members of farmer organizations in Terakathi and Hasarchak have called for immediate administrative intervention.
The local community dream of a river free from illegal encroachment, fishing nets, and plastic waste which will ensure both agricultural productivity and environmental balance. They urge the Shyamnagar Upazila Administration and Assistant Commissioner (Land) to take urgent steps.
