Agroecology strengthens environmental protection

By Upen Robi Das from Rajshahi

Agroecology is emerging as a major solution for ensuring the production of safe, nutritious food and the preservation of the environment. With this objective, a workshop titled “Practice of Agroecology and Development of Shotobari initiative” was held recently Poba Upazila of Rajshahi.

The workshop was presided over by Md. Shahidul Islam, Regional Coordinator of BARCIK. Participants shared the challenges they face while promoting agroecology and implementing the “Shotobari” initiative in the region.

It was noted that ancestors used to cultivate crops in eco-friendly ways and managed pests using traditional methods. Natural ingredients like neem leaves, mahogany fruits, tamarind, olives, lemons, and ash were used to prepare organic pesticides, which caused no harm to soil, water, or air.

Excessive use of chemicals in modern agriculture not only harms the environment but also reduces food quality and increases prices. Therefore, it is possible to grow safe, nutritious crops at lower costs by utilizing indigenous knowledge and eco-friendly practices.

The workshop emphasized promoting organic pest management, production of organic and vermicompost fertilizers, and involving local communities in these initiatives. Farmers will be supported in conserving and sowing local seed varieties. Research will be conducted to identify high-yielding, drought-tolerant varieties suitable for the region to ensure higher productivity at lower costs.

BARCIK representatives also stated that agroecology is a powerful tool for protecting biodiversity, including birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. They urged that the importance of agroecology in producing safe food and conserving the environment be strongly promoted among farmers and communities.
