A discussion meeting was held recently in Namovodra slum, Rajshahi, to strengthen community organization and collective action for protecting urban poor civic rights and improving their living conditions.
Organized jointly by BARCIK and the Namovodra Bastuhara Sarbik Unnayan Sangathan, the meeting brought together members of the community organization to discuss their ongoing challenges, including access to civic services, safe housing and sanitation, as well as concerns over possible eviction.
Speaking at the meeting, organization president Md. Bacchu Mia said urban poor had been living in the area for nearly 40 years and had the right to live in the city. He said that they needed to remain united and strengthen their organization to address their concerns collectively.
He also called on members to participate regularly in meetings, discussions and social initiatives, identify their own problems, seek solutions and raise their demands with the relevant authorities.
Participants said that urban poor in the slum are equal citizens and therefore, entitled to civic rights. Speakers further stressed that communities should not depend solely on external support but should strengthen their own organizations so they can collectively represent their concerns and advocate for their rights.
The meeting was facilitated by BARCIK’s official Tohura Khatun Lily. Participants agreed to hold regular meetings, strengthen communication among members and work collectively on civic rights, eviction concerns and other community issues.
