Farmer-led participatory agricultural research held in Shyamnagar

BARCIK organized a three-day training workshop on Farmer-Led Participatory Agricultural Research: Conceptualization and Application in Shyamnagar, Satkhira recently. Staff involved in participatory agricultural research from Rajshahi, Manikganj, Netrokona, and the coastal region participated in the training.

The workshop was facilitated by ABM Touhidul Alam, Director of Agroecology and Food Sovereignty at BARCIK, with support from regional coordinators and farmer leaders.

Discussions focused on the transformation of Bangladesh’s agricultural sector, the challenges faced by farmers, agroecology, biodiversity conservation, climate justice, and food sovereignty. Participants explored the principles and objectives of farmer-led research and examined how local knowledge can contribute to sustainable agricultural development.

On the second day, participants visited three agroecology learning centers managed by Konika Rani, Alpana Rani, and Gobinda Mondal. They observed existing practices, assessed resource use, analyzed ecological relationships within farming systems, and discussed opportunities for strengthening the centers.

The final day of the training emphasized on research methodologies, data collection, documentation, and planning future participatory research initiatives. Each regional team developed a research plan for implementation over the coming year.

Closing the workshop, ABM Touhidul Alam said that expanding agroecological practices is essential for achieving climate justice and food sovereignty. Participants expressed that the training significantly enhanced learning, knowledge sharing, and collaboration, while inspiring them to strengthen farmer-led initiatives in their respective regions.
