A training workshop on preparing and using organic pesticides was recently held at the Pankhali Agroecology Learning Center (ALC) in Burigoalini Union, Shyamnagar. The program was jointly organized by the Pankhali Farmers’ Organization and BARCIK, with 25 man and women participated.
Trainer Sharma Rani Mondal conducted practical sessions where farmers learned how to make organic pesticides using neem extract, ash, tobacco juice, mahogany fruit, garlic extract, naphthalene powder, and other natural ingredients. She also explained proper application and preservation methods.
Sharma Mondal said “The heavy use of chemicals has made farmers dependent on markets and increased pest resistance. Organic alternatives are safer, cost-effective, and protect soil health, biodiversity, and human health,”.
Local farmer leader Hira Parveen (32) said, “Through this training, we learned practical methods of making, storing, and applying organic pesticides. This will help us to ensure safe food for our families and communities while reducing health and environmental risks.”
As farming practices evolve, many farmers have become reliant on chemical inputs, which contaminate food and harm human health. The workshop emphasized that organic pest control which is locally made and environmentally are safe and offers farmers a sustainable and low-cost solution.
