For centuries, the Bengali nation has been celebrating Pahela Baishakh as the Bengali New Year, as a way to express and uphold its cultural heritage and traditions. People of all ages, religions, and backgrounds come together to observe this day in a festive and joyous atmosphere and this year was no exception.

In Sanail village of Baira Union under Singair Upazila of Manikganj district, the Bengali New Year 1432 was celebrated with vibrant festivities. Organized by local farmers’ and youth organizations and supported by BARCIK, the event featured a joyful rally, cultural performances, traditional rural games, and a candle-lighting ceremony.
The celebration began with a colorful procession from the premises of the village’s sacred banyan tree (Bot-tola), with participation from women, adolescents, youth, children, and elders of the village. In the evening, candles were lit by young people to welcome the New Year. Participants emphasized the importance of Bengali New Year and the need to pass on its cultural significance to the younger generation.

Farmer Nilima Sarker said, “Pahela Baishakh is more than just a festival for us; it serves as an opportunity to strengthen mutual relationships.” She added, “This tradition has preserved our culture over generations and will continue to do so.”
Local folk artists performed traditional songs, while children added extra charm to the event with rural games and dance performances.
