By Mukter Hossain, from Harirampur, Manikganj

In a green initiative supported by BARCIK, the Harirampur Green Coalition and the Notakhola Youth Team jointly organized a fruit and medicinal tree plantation program at the Notakhola Police Investigation Center in Lechraganj, Harirampur, Manikganj. A total of 50 saplings were planted, including guava, wood apple (kadbel), lemon, tamarind, jarul, arjuna, pomegranate, bael, sonali, jackfruit, and date palm.

Community people and local government officials, including Ward No. 5 Member Shahin Molla, Agriculture Sub-Assistant Officer Mosharraf Hossain, SI Md. Aynul Haque, Kazi Imran Ahmed, ASI Akram Hossain, and other police personnel, representatives from BARCIK, members of the Green coalition Committee, including Sheikh Raton, and youth team member Sheikh Ripon Mia also actively participated in the event.

Following the plantation, a discussion session was held where speakers highlighted the significance of greening river erosion-prone areas like Lechraganj. Speakers in the event said that the Notakhola Police Investigation Center was recently built on new land, which makes it ideal for tree planting. They emphasized that if maintained properly, these trees will grow quickly, provide shade and fruits, and offer shelter and food for birds. In the long term, such plantation efforts will help to protect the environment and ecosystem of the riverine Char areas.

The program concluded with a collective commitment to care for the planted trees and ensure they contribute to a greener and more resilient Harirampur.

It is to mention that due to recurring river erosion, agricultural land, homesteads, trees, and crops are frequently lost to the river. Natural disasters severely affect the region’s biodiversity, damaging fruit, forest, and medicinal plants.
