First Wetland-Based Wildlife Sanctuary declared
By Shahidul Islam from Rajshahi
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Forest Branch-2) has officially declared Biljowana-Bilkumari in Tanore Upazila and Bilbhola in Godagari Upazila of Rajshahi as the country’s first “wetland-based wildlife sanctuaries.” This landmark announcement is the result of long-standing efforts by local communities, the Shib-Barnoi River Protection Committee, and the development organization BARCIK to conserve local biodiversity.

Covering 387 acres, Biljowana-Bilkumari transforms into a wetland during the monsoon and becomes arable land in the dry season. The local way of life—dependent on agriculture, fishing, and livestock—is closely intertwined with this wetland-based ecosystem.
During the Biljowana-Bilkumari Biodiversity Festival, held on International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22), farmers, fishers, women, and students raised key demands for protecting the wetland. These included ensuring water flow, stopping land encroachment, banning chemical pesticides, and providing government support to local fishers during fish breeding seasons when fishing is restricted.

River researcher Mahbub Siddiqui and Wildlife Inspector Md. Jahangir Kabir attended the event. Kabir said, “Biodiversity conservation is essential for ensuring sustainable development.”
