Participants called for effective waste management to build a cleaner urban environment in a citizen dialogue titled “Waste Management in Satkhira City: Crisis and Solutions,”
The event was organized by on 28 September in the Satkhira Public Library auditorium which was presided over by Abul Kalam Azad, Secretary of the Satkhira District Citizens’ Committee and President of BAPA Satkhira.
The speakers of the event said that due to poor waste management, Satkhira city has become littered with garbage. The city lacks proper drainage systems, and during the rainy season, water accumulates, carrying waste across streets. There are no designated dumping sites, nor a formal waste disposal station, despite Satkhira being a first-class municipality. They warned that if the situation continues, the city could become uninhabitable.
Participants urged the authorities to designate specific waste disposal sites, improve drainage systems, and establish dumping stations to ensure proper waste management and a cleaner city.
It is to mention that according to the position paper presented at the dialogue, Satkhira, with a population of over 250,000, has only 20–22 dustbins, most of which are open and uncovered. As a result, waste overflows from the bins in some areas while residents are forced to throw garbage on the streets in others.
