An aquatic plant fair was organized in the coastal region of Shyamnagar to raise awareness about the conservation and sustainable use of aquatic biodiversity. The event was organized by by Shapla Kishori Organization and Green Coalition with support from BARCIK.
At the fair, adolescent girls from Paschim Jelekhali village showcased nearly 65 varieties of aquatic plants collected from local water bodies, including water lilies, lotuses, swamp grass, duckweed, water spinach, and many others. They presented detailed information about the plants’ natural habitats, seasonal availability, medicinal and nutritional values, and their significance in maintaining ecological balance.
Discussants of the event highlighted that frequent natural disasters, salinity intrusion, and loss of natural habitats are threatening aquatic biodiversity in the coastal belt.
Local farmer Tarapada Ghatidar (69) said that increasing salinity, chemical use, and land scarcity are driving many species toward extinction. Guests including UP member Nipa Chakraborty, teacher Bibhuti Majhi, agricultural officer Masum Billah, and BARCIK representatives emphasized that aquatic plants are vital for the survival of fish, livestock, and even humans.
Adolescent exhibitor Onannya Rani expressed share her concern saying, “My grandmother used to say our area was once rich in aquatic plants, but now they are disappearing due to rising salinity and natural calamities. We must all become aware and work together to protect them.”
Participants concluded with a collective commitment to conserving aquatic biodiversity for the survival of all living beings and the protection of the environment.
