Agroecology practices reduces climate stresses of farmers

With support from BARCIK, a workshop titled “Agroecology and Biodiversity Conservation” was organized by the Bishwanathpur Agroecology Learning Center recently. Participants included farmers, teachers, imams, local government representatives, traditional healers, journalists, and youth from Bishwanathpur, Gachh Goria, and Panchkahania villages.

The key discussants of the workshop focused on agroecological practices as solutions to climate change saying, agroecology helps improve soil health, conserve biodiversity, and reduce reliance on chemical farming. It strengthens family farming and use of local seeds contribute to environmental protection. They further said, practicing organic farming, preserving rainwater, reducing groundwater use, and promoting crop diversity are essential for sustainable agriculture and.protecting beneficial organisms like frogs and earthworms supports soil health and ecosystem restoration.

Teacher Md. Janu Mia and BARCIK officer Mr. Ohidur Rahman emphasized that biodiversity and agroecology are interlinked, and protecting native seeds and farmers’ rights is vital.

Senior farmer Janu Mia said, “We grow safe food without chemical fertilizers, but we don’t get fair prices. I use compost I make myself and avoid pesticides. We must save our seeds and protect beneficial creatures to keep our soil healthy.”

Journalist Mirza Hriday Sagar stressed the importance of empowering farmers, protecting birds, and ensuring every farmer becomes more resilient and informed.
