Ankhi Akter: A Grassroots change agent of Self-Reliance and Social Service

By Ritu Robi Das, from Manikganj

In Andharmanik village, Ankhi Akter has become a familiar symbol of confidence, self-reliance and community service. The youngest of three sisters and one brother, Ankhi lost her father several years ago but continued to build her life through hard work and determination.

Many skills, one purpose

Ankhi is skilled in handicrafts, sewing and farming. She grows tuber crops and other vegetables and maintains a diverse home garden filled with fruit trees, flowers and vegetables. Her commitment to chemical-free food production has turned her homestead into a small green space. She was also a strong student and participated successfully in various sports competitions.

Serving her community

Ankhi studied pharmacy and has used her knowledge to support people in her community. She regularly checks blood pressure for older people and neighbors and provides basic health advice. Villagers often seek her help when someone falls ill. She previously worked at Joseph Memorial Clinic in Jaynagar but left the job because of personal difficulties. She continues to serve the community and has shared her health knowledge as a resource person in BARCIK discussions on reproductive health for women and adolescent girls.

Leadership and women’s empowerment

Ankhi is also active in women’s rights and social development. As General Secretary of the District Women’s Development Committee, she works to strengthen women’s social and economic independence and raise awareness against child marriage. Whenever she learns of a child marriage or violence against women in the community, she speaks out and works to prevent it.

Her journey with BARCIK

Ankhi has been involved with BARCIK since 2021. She has participated in initiatives including seed exchange and conservation, environmental activities and International Women’s Day programs. Ankhi’s journey shows how determination, skills and community leadership can create change beyond one’s own life. For the people of Andharmanik, she is not only a self-reliant woman but also a trusted grassroots leader and an inspiration to others.
