Members of Coastal Green Coalition and the Sundarbans Student Solidarity Team submitted a memorandum to the Shyamnagar upazila administration, demanding action to resolve the longstanding waterlogging in Badghata village.

The memorandum was handed over to Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mosammat Roni Khatun recently. The organizations urged the government to take urgent and effective measures.

According to the memorandum, Badghata is an agriculture-dependent village under Shyamnagar municipality, yet waterlogging during the monsoon severely disrupts farming. Hundreds of bighas of agriculture land remain submerged each year, preventing cultivation. Currently, nearly 200 bighas of land behind Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex remain fallow and could not be used for aman paddy cultivation. The local communities also suffer as homesteads are waterlogged, while stagnant water has begun to rot, spreading foul odors and skin diseases. The communities demanded a permanent solution to the crisis.

Among those present were Krishna Nanda Mukherjee, president of Green Coalition’s  municipal committee, senior journalist Afzalul Haque, general secretary Kiran Shankar Chatterjee, vice president Delwara Begum, convener Kumud Ranjan Gayan, Sundarbans Student Solidarity Team convener Saidul Islam, youth activists Tripti Rani Biswas and Kamrul Islam, farmer Rahul, BARCIK staff, and others.
