In line with the theme of climate change, a debate competition titled “Rich Countries Are Responsible for Climate Change” was organized recently at Khattibangua, Netrakona Municipality by Janata High School with support from BARCIK and the District Green Coalition. Students of class nine and ten participated in the debate.
The chief guest was the school principal, Mr. Qaisul Azam. Judges included experienced teachers Sita Rani Ghosh, Monirul Haque, and Ranjabarti Sarkar. BARCIK’s regional coordinator, Md. Ohidur Rahman, moderated the event. Students presented arguments with reasoning, evidence, and analysis.
The affirmative team argued that developed countries are responsible for climate change due to excessive fossil fuel consumption, high carbon emissions, and environmental degradation, which increases natural disasters. The opposing team countered that all countries, not just developed ones, contribute to environmental damage and must work together to protect nature and reduce fossil fuel use.
Md. Ohidur Rahman said, “The purpose of the debate is to cultivate logical thinking, knowledge, and skills among students. Such events also promote communication, collaboration, and respect for diverse opinions.”
The tenth-grade team led by Someshwari emerged as the winners, and Arpita Chakraborty of grade ten was recognized as the best speaker.
However, debates are more than competitions; they are powerful tools that enhance students’ knowledge, skills, and personality. Debating fosters critical thinking, reasoning, and mutual respect, while teaching students to express themselves confidently and persuasively.
